The Telangana government has initiated measures to protect Tandur redgram, which holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, using digital technology. This move aims to curb counterfeiting and safeguard the interests of farmers.
The state government issued orders on Monday, entrusting this responsibility to Hyderabad-based Tryambhu Tech Solutions Private Limited (TRST01). The company will link farmers cultivating redgram, their land, crop, and yield.
Tandur redgram, cultivated in Vikarabad district, received GI recognition in December 2022, becoming Telangana's first agricultural product to achieve this status. This recognition has given Tandur redgram a unique identity globally.
The digital protection system will ensure the quality and authenticity of Tandur redgram. This will also enhance consumer trust in the product.
These measures are expected to increase the market demand for Tandur redgram, allowing farmers to fetch better prices. The problem of counterfeit products will also be reduced.
This decision by the Telangana government serves as an example of technology adoption in the agricultural sector. There is potential for similar protection to be extended to more agricultural products in the future.
