The area under maize cultivation is likely to increase significantly in Telangana during the upcoming Rabi season, V6 Velugu reported on October 12, 2026. Farmers are showing greater interest in maize this time due to good yields and income from the crop last year.
Farmers are focusing on alternative crops as cotton yields were not as expected during the Kharif season, and increased investments led to losses. In this context, maize has become an attractive option.
Due to drought conditions and reduced water availability in the state, farmers are opting for maize cultivation, which requires less water. This is favorable for farmers facing water scarcity.
V6 Velugu stated that farmers are preparing to remove the cotton cultivated in the Kharif season and plant maize in its place. This is an example of crop rotation.
The government is also encouraging maize cultivation by setting up procurement centers in villages. This provides an easy way for farmers to sell their produce.
As Telangana farmers face drought conditions and losses in cotton cultivation, shifting to maize, which requires less water and offers higher yields, could prove to be economically beneficial for them.
