To address the escalating power demand in the state, arrangements have been finalized for the supply of five lakh tonnes of coal. This crucial consignment is expected to significantly boost power generation at the Yadadri Thermal Power Station (YTPS), which has been operating below full capacity due to coal constraints.

The coal, procured through window-2 auctions, originates from Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) in Odisha and South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL) in Chhattisgarh. The lifting of this coal is anticipated to commence next week.

Officials have confirmed that the consignment comprises grade-11 coal, which is superior in quality to the G-18, G-13, and G-12 grades currently being supplied to thermal stations across the state.

The state is currently grappling with soaring power consumption, driven by unseasonal heat and increased agricultural demand. With the impact of El Nino contributing to persistent hot weather, the government's immediate focus is on enhancing generation at YTPS.

It has been clarified by officials that this five lakh tonnes of coal is a temporary arrangement. The state government has previously sought coal allocation from Mahanadi coal mines through a coal linkage agreement.

This timely coal supply is vital for mitigating the power deficit in the state and ensuring an uninterrupted electricity supply to its citizens. It will help meet the growing power requirements during the summer months.
