Water scarcity in forests has begun earlier than usual this season, attributed to the El Nino effect. While October typically sees a decrease in rainfall and the onset of cooler temperatures, this year has been marked by intense heat.
Maximum temperatures are currently registering 3 to 4 degrees higher than the seasonal average. Severe drought conditions this year, coupled with early intense heat, are leading to a gradual depletion of water resources.
Daytime temperatures in districts such as erstwhile Adilabad, Nizamabad, Nalgonda, and Khammam are exceeding 30 degrees Celsius. This sustained heat is causing grasslands in forested areas to dry up.
Ponds, streams, and check dams within the forests are dwindling. The lack of greenery is leaving wild animals struggling with hunger and thirst.
Pigeons in cities and monkeys in villages are also facing difficulties in finding water. The continued high temperatures in October are exacerbating the situation.
