The Godavari River near the Polavaram spillway has shown a noticeable change in its color. The river, which was a reddish-brown during the monsoon season, now appears blue.

This shift in hue became apparent between early and mid-October. It reflects the seasonal changes in the river's flow, the amount of suspended soil particles, and the influence of water from its tributaries.

From July until the first week of October, heavy rains in the upstream areas brought a large volume of floodwater into the Godavari. This water carried various sediments.

The floodwaters brought red soil, silt, and sand that had been washed down from the surrounding hills, streams, and other catchment areas. These suspended materials gave the river its distinct copper or reddish-brown look.

As rainfall has decreased and floodwaters have receded, the amount of sediment entering the river has also declined. This reduction in sediment load is a key factor in the river's altered appearance.

The current blue color of the river indicates a lower concentration of suspended particles in the water. This is a common seasonal variation.
