Illegal extraction of groundwater from borewells and farmhouses in Hyderabad's suburban areas, particularly those under GO 111, is rampant. Water is being transported via tankers to the Hitech City region, a practice that came to light on October 17, 2026.

The demand for water has increased in the city due to the El Nino effect. IT companies, hostels, large apartments, and commercial complexes are experiencing a heightened need for water supplied by tankers.

Capitalizing on this demand, some private individuals have initiated an illegal trade, extracting groundwater and selling it. This business is thriving, with tankers ranging from 10,000 to 20,000 liters being used for transportation.

Hundreds of tankers are arriving in the West City area overnight, supplying water from regions covered by GO 111 to IT areas. This indicates a large-scale operation.

Illegal water transportation is also occurring from the vicinity of the twin reservoirs. This illicit water trade continues unabated.
