The modernization of the Mahaprasthanam Crematorium in Hyderabad was completed on October 19, 2026. A client, in collaboration with the local Municipal Corporation, undertook this project to upgrade the facility.
Architects DA STUDIO oversaw the transformation of the previously neglected crematory into a state-of-the-art facility. The initiative aimed to modernize the existing 3.7-acre site.
The goal was to accommodate cremation rituals in a culturally and contextually appropriate manner. The site underwent rejuvenation and restructuring to facilitate an organized procession of funeral rituals.
The process includes five major stages: body preparation, the cremation process, mourning rites, purification for family members, and a period of remembrance. The design involved creating spaces among the existing crematory, resulting in a scattered arrangement of built forms.
Sameer Chawda and DA STUDIO provided photographs of the completed project. This modernization seeks to offer enhanced funeral services to the community in Hyderabad.
