The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) will introduce its 'Dial-a-Green Tanker' service starting November 1. This new initiative aims to provide treated sewage water for construction and other non-potable uses.
The primary goal of this service is to reduce the reliance on drinking water for activities that do not require potable supplies. This measure is being implemented to safeguard Hyderabad's water reserves, especially given concerns about rainfall, groundwater levels, and reservoir capacities.
HMWSSB Managing Director K Ashok Reddy stated that the board is preparing this service due to worries about the impact of El Niño and potential water shortages in the upcoming summer season.
The board has identified various potential users for the treated sewage water, including construction sites, industrial facilities, parks, and green belts across the city.
This step by HMWSSB is part of a broader effort to conserve potable water during the eight months leading up to the next monsoon. This period typically sees increased pressure on the city's water supply system.
HMWSSB has already convened a meeting with representatives from the Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India, Telangana Builders’ Forum, National Real Estate Development Council, and other key stakeholders in the construction sector.
