Hyderabad's overhead power lines and crowded poles are set to give way to an underground cable network. TGSPDCL's project is estimated at ₹5,756 crore. Deccan Chronicle reported that tendering has begun, and that work will start in the new year and take two years.

Phase one

  • 11 divisions in the Banjara Hills, Secunderabad, Hyderabad Central and Hyderabad South circles: Banjara Hills, Greenlands, Saifabad, Paradise, Cantonment, Mehdipatnam, Charminar, Begum Bazar, Bowenpally, Asmangadh and Azamabad.
  • Underground cable: 311 km at 33 kV, 5,772 km at 11 kV and 1,718 km of LT – about 7,800 km in all.
  • 6,251 km of insulated aerial bunched cable in narrow lanes, which stays overhead but is safer.
  • 4,555 SCADA ring main units and 9,946 compact RMUs, so supply can be rerouted around faults.

Why the cost rose

The project got administrative sanction at ₹4,051 crore in November 2025. NewsMeter reported that about ₹486 crore for price escalation and extra cable, plus ₹1,219 crore for road restoration and horizontal directional drilling to limit digging, took the estimate to ₹5,756 crore. This is an estimate; the final cost will come from bidding. The state regulator, TGERC, cleared the tender process.

Officials say the network will cut outages from rain, wind and falling trees, lower electrocution risk and free up footpaths. Optical fibre ducts will be laid alongside the cables.
