The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is preparing to expand the use of treated water starting November 1. This initiative aims to conserve drinking water sources and prevent shortages during the summer, especially in view of the expected El Niño impact.

The board plans to prioritize treated water as an alternative to drinking water in the construction sector and various industries. It has set an initial target of utilizing 500 million litres per day (MLD) of treated water.

HMWSSB is also developing its Green Water Tanker digital platform to streamline the booking, supply, and tracking of treated water tankers. This platform is expected to enhance efficiency in water distribution.

Furthermore, the board intends to take steps to make better use of the surplus treated water that is currently available at private sewage treatment plants (STPs) across the city.

Representatives from the Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India (CREDAI) and other construction sector organizations have assured the water board of their full cooperation in this important initiative.

This strategic move is crucial for residents of Hyderabad and Telangana, as it will help mitigate potential drinking water shortages during the summer months. By diverting treated water for construction and industrial uses, the pressure on potable water resources will be significantly reduced.
