An estimated 20 crore litres of water are wasted daily in Greater Hyderabad for washing vehicles. This occurs despite existing water scarcity in the city, with water washing of vehicles continuing unchecked.
Greater Hyderabad currently has over 95 lakh vehicles of various types. This includes 65 lakh two-wheelers, more than 16 lakh cars, and lakhs of lorries, other transport vehicles, city RTC, and private buses.
The number of water servicing centres in the city is expanding to accommodate the growing vehicle population. There are currently between 3,000 and 5,000 automobile servicing centres, as well as car and bike washing stations, across the city.
Despite the availability of modern methods such as steam washing, waterless washing, and dry washing, many servicing centres are not updating their practices. Experts suggest that vehicle owners also need to change their mindset regarding water usage for washing.
