In a significant boost to Andhra Pradesh's hydropower generation capacity, the Lower Sileru Hydroelectric Project at Polluru in Polavaram district is set to become the state's second-largest hydel power station, with the installation of two additional generating units entering the final stages.
The expansion, undertaken at an estimated cost of ₹536 crore, will increase the project's installed capacity from 460 MW to 690 MW. This brings it closer to the 770-MW Srisailam Right Bank Hydroelectric Station, which currently ranks first in the state.
AP Genco director (hydel) Sujay Kumar stated that power generation from the fifth unit was scheduled to begin in November, while the sixth unit was expected to be commissioned in March.
The project comprises six units of 115 MW each, of which four are already operational. The two new units will also have a capacity of 115 MW each.
Once both units become operational, Lower Sileru will emerge as a major contributor to the state's hydropower capacity. The power station harnesses the Sileru River's flow, a tributary of the Sabari, to generate electricity.
This expansion will play a crucial role in improving power supply to both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It will help meet the states' electricity demands, providing a stable power supply, especially during peak demand periods.
