Works are currently underway on the grounded Bangladesh-flagged cargo vessel MV Maa, located near Tenneti Park in Visakhapatnam. These activities have raised questions regarding adherence to the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) directives.
The proposal to transform the vessel into a tourism attraction has not yet secured the necessary approvals. Despite the absence of these clearances, work on the ship is proceeding, drawing attention from environmentalists and local residents.
Videos showing the ongoing work on the vessel are circulating widely on social media platforms. Citizens and environmental groups are seeking clarification on the permissions under which these activities are being conducted.
The NGT, in its order for a suo motu case (OA No. 702 of 2023), explicitly stated that no construction, stabilization, installation of structures, or tourism-related activities, including preliminary works, should commence at the site.
This directive was to remain in effect until all statutory approvals, including Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) and forest clearances, were fully obtained. The NGT issued this order when it concluded the suo motu case.
In light of these developments, there are growing calls for authorities to address the ongoing works at the vessel site immediately. The public awaits clarity on the next steps from officials.
