The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Hyderabad police commissioner to submit an action-taken report within four weeks regarding alleged lapses in handling a sexual assault and harassment case. The complaint concerns a female student of VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering & Technology (VNRVJIET) at Bachupally.

The complaint was filed by R N Shankar, a student leader and research scholar. He sought an inquiry into the alleged role of the college management, principal, and other officials, in addition to the police investigation.

According to Hyderabad Mail, the complaint alleges that the college management and principal were aware of the incident but failed to take appropriate action. It also sought an inquiry into why the names of the concerned college officials were not included in the first information report (FIR).

The complaint relates to FIR No. 217/2026, which was registered at Bachupally police station on February 28, 2026. The NHRC's focus is on the alleged procedural shortcomings in this case.

The NHRC's intervention in this case highlights concerns about student safety and grievance redressal mechanisms in educational institutions across Telangana. This directive underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in delivering justice to victims.
