Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra clarified India's stance on cryptocurrencies on Saturday. He stated that the country remains cautious about cryptocurrencies while promoting underlying technologies such as distributed ledger technology (DLT) and tokenisation.
Speaking at the Kautilya Economic Conclave, Malhotra said India supports innovation in technologies underlying crypto assets, including distributed ledger and tokenisation, telanganatoday.com reported. This indicates a forward-looking approach to technological advancements.
However, he explained that the cautious approach towards cryptocurrencies is due to concerns over monetary sovereignty, monetary policy, and capital flows. These concerns are vital for maintaining the nation's financial stability.
Malhotra also flagged cross-border payments as a significant challenge. This suggests that improvements are needed in the realm of international financial transactions.
He mentioned that the RBI and public-private partnership (PPP) mode are utilizing some of these underlying technologies. This highlights India's commitment to leveraging technology for various applications.
Investors and citizens in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana should note India's cautious approach to cryptocurrencies. This stance will likely influence the future regulation and adoption of digital assets in the region and across the country.
