Experts are reviewing the performance of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) more than 12 years after the formation of Telangana. Questions are being raised about whether the company is maintaining its strength as a public enterprise or if its historical legacy is diminishing.

Concerns are growing over a decline in coal production, a reduction in the regular workforce, financial disputes, and uncertainty regarding the company's future. Experts emphasize that Singareni's coal wealth belongs to the public, and its operations must be transparent for public scrutiny.

Coal production increased from 60.38 million tonnes in the 2015–16 financial year to a peak of 70.02 million tonnes in 2023–24. This marked the highest production level achieved by the company.

However, production subsequently decreased. It dropped to 69.01 million tonnes in 2024–25 and further declined to 58 million tonnes in 2025–26. These figures raise questions about the company's future direction.

Observers suggest an evidence-based assessment is needed for Singareni's performance, its unresolved issues, and the public interest it serves. They state that political celebrations cannot replace a thorough examination of the company's operations.

Coal miners have expressed dissatisfaction with their 34 percent share in SCCL profits. This issue also highlights internal challenges within the company.
