Rice prices in Telangana have seen a sharp increase, despite the state being one of India's largest paddy producers. This situation points to a disconnect in the agricultural market.

Wholesale Sona rice prices rose by 65.4% year-on-year, from Rs 2,068 per quintal in October 2025 to Rs 3,419 in October 2026. This jump has impacted consumers.

Rice inflation in the state reached 13% in September. This rise in prices occurs even as Telangana produces a surplus of paddy.

Production alone does not determine the price households pay for rice. The grain passes through several stages between the farm gate and the kitchen.

These stages include procurement, storage, milling, transport, wholesale trade, and retail distribution. Each step can influence the final price.

Even with a paddy surplus, consumers are paying more for processed rice. This indicates a challenge in how agricultural markets serve urban populations.
