Rice prices in Telangana have seen an unexpected increase, with fine varieties now costing between Rs. 80-90 per kilogram. This surge is impacting the monthly budgets of middle-class families, with some 25-kilogram rice bags exceeding Rs. 2,100.

Despite abundant rice stocks nationwide, the price hike in Telangana is a cause for concern. Experts indicate that the country holds nearly three times the buffer stock of rice, suggesting no immediate shortage.

Approximately 298 lakh tonnes of paddy are awaiting milling into rice within the state. Concerns over Kharif yields and uncertainty regarding the Rabi crop are leading traders to hoard stocks illegally.

Increased purchases from other states are also contributing to the price escalation. Traders are raising prices based on predictions of future shortages, according to market analysts.

Given the high rice reserves in the central pool, experts recommend increasing supply through the Open Market Sale Scheme. This measure could help stabilize prices and bring relief to consumers.

Experts have also advised the state government to implement special surveillance and review market supply and demand. They urged authorities to take action against illegal hoarding to ensure price stability.
