Telangana has seen a significant surge in rabi paddy cultivation, reaching 52.02 lakh acres in 2023-24. This figure accounts for 51.38% of the total acreage reported across major winter rice-growing states, according to a Union agriculture ministry comparison.

A decade of rapid expansion, fueled by irrigation projects, assured procurement, and farmer preference, has solidified paddy's position as the dominant rabi crop in the state.

Following Telangana, Tamil Nadu recorded 29.13 lakh acres, while Andhra Pradesh reported 14.16 lakh acres. Kerala accounted for 1.78 lakh acres, with other states collectively reporting 4.15 lakh acres.

State statistical data reveals a more than fourfold increase in the area under the crop, from 12.23 lakh acres in 2014-15 to 52.16 lakh acres in 2023-24.

This rapid expansion, however, complicates efforts to shift cultivation patterns amid growing concerns over water availability in the region.

The increasing dependence on rabi paddy in Telangana highlights a critical need for sustainable agricultural practices and water management strategies to ensure long-term food and water security for the state's residents.
