The UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, launched by the central government on October 21, 2016, has now completed ten years. More than 1.49 crore passengers have benefited from affordable regional air travel through this initiative.
According to information released by the Civil Aviation Ministry, 625 air routes have been made operational across the country under this scheme. These routes connect 90 airports, including two water aerodromes and 15 heliports.
The UDAN scheme has not only integrated remote areas into the national aviation network but has also stimulated local economies. It has boosted tourism and created employment opportunities throughout the country.
The Ministry stated that the scheme has strengthened regional tourism, healthcare access, and trade, thereby contributing to economic growth in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.
Following the success of the initial program, a revamped version has been introduced. The goal is to add 120 new destinations over the next decade, making air travel affordable for an additional 4 crore passengers.
The focus will be on expanding connectivity to remote, hilly, and aspirational districts, particularly in the North Eastern region. Special support will be provided for helipads and smaller airports.
