Fifteen traditional village tanks across seven villages in Shivampet mandal, Medak district, Telangana, have undergone rejuvenation. The “Sustainable Access to Safe Water” project was carried out from January 2024 to March 2025.
This initiative has created a water storage and groundwater recharge potential of approximately 205 million litres. It has strengthened water security for over 15,000 people in the area.
The project supported agricultural livelihoods across 1,535 acres through activities such as desilting of tanks, strengthening of bunds, and active community involvement. Around 2.04 lakh cubic metres of silt was removed during these efforts.
The removed silt, which is roughly equivalent to the volume of 82 Olympic-size swimming pools, was distributed to 150 individual farmers and three community groups. Farmers utilized this silt on their agricultural land, enhancing soil health and supporting long-term water management.
Ms. Anjali Makhija, Trustee and CEO of S.M. Sehgal Foundation, stated that restoring traditional village tanks is an important step in addressing water challenges. She added that the project reflects a collective effort to improve local water availability and build resilience in water-stressed regions.
The project was implemented with the support of Anandana – The Coca-Cola India Foundation, working closely with village institutions and local residents. As part of the initiative, 500 saplings were also planted.
