Telangana Genco chairman and managing director S Harish has suspended B Suresh, chief engineer, YTPS (construction)-stage I, citing “gross negligence and supervisory lapses” in planning, monitoring, and execution of priority works aimed at improving power generation.

The action followed the chief minister’s review of the state’s power situation on Wednesday, during which he expressed strong displeasure over the plant’s performance and warned that he would not hesitate to suspend even senior officials if the situation persisted.

Built at a cost of thousands of crores, the 4,000 MW YTPS comprises five units of 800 MW each. However, the plant's present capacity is 3,200 MW and has been generating only around 1,500-2,000 MW daily, largely due to coal supply and operational issues, according to official sources.

Officials are facing mounting challenges in meeting the State’s power demand, which touched an all-time high of 20,003 MW on Thursday, surpassing the previous peak demand of 19,800 MW.

Sources said the plant requires around 14 million tonnes of G-9 grade coal annually, but such coal is not available in Telangana’s mines except from SCCL’s Naini mine in Odisha.

It is crucial for the Yadadri Thermal Power Plant to operate at full capacity to meet the increasing power demand in the state and ensure an uninterrupted power supply to citizens.
