The theatrical trailer of Vijay Deverakonda's much-awaited Ranabaali was unveiled on Thursday, October 8, at a grand launch event in Hyderabad. The period action drama reunites Vijay with director Rahul Sankrityan after Taxiwaala. It is produced by Naveen Yerneni and Y. Ravi Shankar under Mythri Movie Makers and presented by T-Series.
What the trailer shows
Rather than opening on hero elevation, the trailer first establishes the suffering of people crushed by famine and colonial exploitation under British rule, and lets that grief build toward the hero's arrival. Vijay plays Singanamala Bobbili Ranabaali, a palegar (chieftain) from Rayalaseema, in a rugged, physical avatar that marks a clear break from the urban roles he is best known for.
Hollywood actor Arnold Vosloo, remembered for The Mummy, plays the menacing British official Sir Theodore Hector. Rashmika Mandanna appears as Jayamma, Ranabaali's wife, adding emotional weight to the story, and the couple's romantic track gets a few moments of its own. Ajay–Atul's background score drives the large-scale action sequences.
The history behind the story
The film is set against the Great Famine of 1876–78 in the Madras Presidency, which claimed an estimated eight million Indian lives, with colonial policy and inadequate relief widely blamed for deepening the catastrophe. The makers have stressed that Ranabaali is not a biopic but a cinematic retelling drawn from historical records and folklore. The story is written by Pramod Tammineni.
Why this trailer matters
Despite a teaser and songs, industry watchers have noted that pre-release buzz has been lower than expected. With the release just a week away and a Dussehra clash looming with Rajinikanth's Jailer 2, the trailer is the team's biggest push to build momentum.
Rashmika skipped the launch because she is shooting Raaka in Mumbai. Fans had hoped it would be the couple's first public event together since their marriage; Vijay attended alone.
A third outing for Vijay and Rashmika
After Geetha Govindam and Dear Comrade, this is the pair's third film together and their first since getting married. It is also Vijay's third collaboration with Mythri Movie Makers, after Dear Comrade and Kushi.
Release
Originally slated for September 11, Ranabaali was moved to October 16 to coincide with Vijayadashami. It releases worldwide in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi and Malayalam.
