India's Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill had a short stay at the crease during his Ranji Trophy return, scoring just one run. He was dismissed by left-arm spinner Ajay Mandal while playing for Punjab against Chhattisgarh in New Chandigarh.
Gill faced only five deliveries before Mandal bowled him in the 27th over. He came to bat at number four after Vihaan Malhotra was out leg before wicket to Dharmendrasinh Jadeja.
The 27-year-old Gill chose to play this match to gain some red-ball practice. This appearance comes ahead of India's upcoming tour of New Zealand.
Gill had not participated in Punjab’s opening game of the season against Assam. While he is not part of the T20I squad, he will join India's touring side for five ODIs and two Tests in New Zealand.
The New Zealand tour is part of the team’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Additionally, the Test series will contribute to India's efforts to secure a spot in the World Test Championship final.
