Two women with Telugu roots are running for statewide office in the US midterm elections on Tuesday, November 3.

Saritha Komatireddy (New York, Republican)

  • Her parents moved to the US in the 1980s from what is now Telangana. She was born in Brooklyn and is 42 (ETV Bharat).
  • She spent more than a decade as a federal prosecutor in the Eastern District of New York and was DEA chief of staff in 2023–24. She is a Harvard Law graduate.
  • She faces two-term Democrat Letitia James. Siena poll (October 19–22, 807 likely voters, ±4.1%): James 54%, Komatireddy 39%, against 52–39 in September.
  • An OnMessage poll commissioned by her campaign put the gap at 6 points (50.7–44.7). Her campaign says it has raised over $1 million since the October 9 debate.
  • She says fewer than 100 of the office's roughly 700 attorneys handle criminal cases, and promises to more than triple that number.

A James campaign spokeswoman said Komatireddy has no respect for the law and tied her to Trump. James backer Micah Lasher said the office's enforcement powers are "fundamentally civil in nature".

Aruna Miller (Maryland, Democrat)

Born in Hyderabad, Miller moved to the US with her family at age seven and has been Maryland's Lieutenant Governor since January 2023, the first South Asian woman elected to the post in the US. She is running again with Governor Wes Moore. A UMBC poll (September 22–27) had Moore at 51% and Republican Dan Cox at 24%.
