Artificial intelligence-assisted screening devices have been installed at the Alwal and Kushaiguda Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in Medchal-Malkajgiri district. These devices are being used to screen women for breast and cervical cancer.
The Mahita Foundation, with support from Indian Oil Corporation's CSR program, set up these devices. Through their use, breast cancer was identified in three ASHA workers.
Officials at the PHCs stated that early detection helps in easier treatment. The devices are proving useful in improving women's health services in the area.
However, the centres face challenges in procuring necessary consumables and ensuring adequate training for staff. Addressing these operational issues is important for continued service.
At the Alwal PHC, officials mentioned that the existing device requires an upgrade. They clarified that the cost for this upgrade would be in the thousands, not lakhs of rupees.
The successful identification of cancer cases shows the benefit of early screening. Efforts are underway to address the operational challenges and ensure the continued functionality of these devices.
