The TDP–Jana Sena–BJP alliance has swept Andhra Pradesh's urban local body polls. As of 10:26 PM, the alliance was set to win 12 of the 13 municipal corporations, ETV Bharat reported. Counting was still under way.
Corporations and municipalities
- The TDP won the mayor posts in Guntur, Machilipatnam, Chittoor and Kurnool. Jana Sena led in Vijayawada and Eluru.
- Anantapur was a close fight between the YSRCP and the BJP. Counting in Ongole was delayed by the cyclone.
- 17 municipalities were won unopposed: TDP 15, Jana Sena 1, BJP 1. In the rest, the TDP had won 54 and led in 5; the BJP had won 3.
- The YSRCP won Nandikotkur in Nandyal district. Counting in Chirala was postponed to November 6.
Pulivendula, Kuppam, Pithapuram
In Pulivendula, the alliance won 37 of 40 wards (TDP 34, BJP 2, Jana Sena 1) and the YSRCP won 3. Alliance candidate Geetha Kumari won the chairperson post over the YSRCP's YS Prameela by 13,875 votes. It is the TDP's first win of the municipality. The alliance also won all 32 wards in Jammalamadugu. In Kuppam the TDP won 31 of 32 wards, and in Pithapuram Jana Sena won 19 of 36.
Both sides
CM Chandrababu Naidu called the verdict a clear testament to the government's performance and said any minor gaps would be fixed. YSRCP chief Jagan Mohan Reddy alleged the polls were rigged with help from the police and the State Election Commission, said the process was compromised at every stage from nominations to counting, and called the contests "selections" rather than elections. He sought a High Court stay on counting; the court allowed counting in Pulivendula to go ahead.
Turnout in the November 1 polling was 60.96%.
