A devotee driving home from the Devi Parashakthi Temple in Pontiac, Michigan, was shot at around 10 PM on October 19. It happened some distance from the temple, near the Auburn Hills–Pontiac border. The devotee was not hurt.
What the temple says
In a Facebook statement, the temple said the shooting was an isolated, random incident with no link to the temple or its worship. "Police have apprehended the suspect and confirmed that the incident was not racially motivated," it said. The temple added that Navaratri celebrations ended peacefully with a record number of devotees.
A second report
Social media posts say that on October 18 an intruder entered the Subrahmanya Temple in Farmington Hills, littered the grounds and abused devotees, and was later arrested. Officials have not confirmed this account.
Earlier this month, police arrested a man over an alleged plot to carry out a mass shooting at the Sri Venkateswara Swami Temple in Aurora, Illinois. Since then, Indian families in the US have grown more worried about the safety of Hindu temples.
