Deputy state coroner Paresa Spanos delivered her findings on Wednesday, stating that Amrita's life could have been saved if the doctor at Monash Medical Centre had recognized and treated her deteriorating condition in time. Amrita died from lymphocytic myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, on April 30, 2022.
Amrita's father, Chandra Sekhar Lanka, and mother, Satya Tarapureddi, were present in the courtroom. They nodded and wiped away tears as the findings were read out, appearing to find some solace in the verdict.
Amrita was brought to the hospital’s emergency department around 1 pm on April 29 after suffering stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting for two days, indicating a serious underlying issue.
The coroner criticized the emergency department doctor for failing to recognize the seriousness of her condition. Spanos emphasized that timely and appropriate treatment could have prevented Amrita's death.
This incident raises concerns for individuals from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana who seek medical services abroad. It serves as a stark reminder to be more vigilant when receiving medical care in foreign countries.
