Farmers in Kubheer mandal, Nirmal district, staged a road blockade near Malegaon on Friday after the Congress government ordered them not to use Suddavagu project backwater for crops. Farmers expressed strong anger over the government's actions to remove their motors.
Farmers are questioning why they are not being provided water, especially after their lands were acquired for the project. Lands belonging to farmers from villages such as Malegaon, Kumbhi, Samvli, New Samvli, Nigva, and Mirzapur were submerged by the Suddavagu project.
In the remaining lands not affected by submergence, farmers cultivate crops like turmeric, chili, cotton, and pigeon pea. They have been using the Suddavagu backwater for these crops.
Farmers are expressing distress, stating that if their crops dry up, death is their only recourse. They demanded that the Congress government withdraw its orders to stop using Suddavagu project backwater for crops and to remove their motors.
Even after sacrificing their lands for the project, farmers are facing severe difficulties due to the lack of irrigation water. This situation is significantly impacting the livelihoods of farmers in many villages across Nirmal district.
