The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has put forward a draft amendment to ban the inclusion of sucrose and fructose in food items meant for infants up to six months of age.

This proposed change was published in the Gazette of India on October 16, 2026. The aim is to enhance nutritional safeguards for infants and reduce their early exposure to added sugars.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare issued a statement confirming that the draft Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) Amendment Regulations, 2026, seeks to strengthen the nutritional protection for infants.

FSSAI stated that this amendment will reinforce the current regulatory framework. It ensures that infant nutrition products are formulated to meet the specific requirements for their age.

The draft notification is now open for public consultation. FSSAI is inviting objections and suggestions from all stakeholders within a 60-day period.

The authority will review all feedback received during this timeframe before finalizing the amendment to the regulations.
