A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the changes made by the central government in 2023 to the law governing the appointment of commissioners in the Central Election Commission. The hearing on this petition has not progressed for three years.

Previously, the committee responsible for appointing election commissioners included the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, as reported by Oneindia Telugu.

However, through an amendment to the law in Parliament, the composition of this committee was changed. Now, it includes only the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, and a Union Minister recommended by the Prime Minister, Oneindia Telugu stated.

Petitions challenging this legal amendment were filed in the Supreme Court. However, the hearing on these petitions has not moved forward for three years, according to Oneindia Telugu.

Currently, this crucial petition has come before the Chief Justice, Oneindia Telugu reported. A hearing on it is likely to take place soon.

This development could impact the transparency and impartiality of the electoral process in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Changes in the appointment process of election commissioners are crucial for a democratic system.
