Dumpala Nivruth Kumar, from Lolam village in Indalwai mandal of Nizamabad district, works as an air-conditioning technician with Transguard Group in Dubai. He was arrested on October 11 after an altercation with colleagues at work.

His mother's appeal

His mother, Navaneetha, submitted a petition at the CM Pravasi Prajavani programme in Hyderabad on October 23, asking for legal help to secure his release. She said the family has neither the money nor the legal knowledge to handle a case abroad. She asked the state to work with the external affairs ministry and the Indian consulate in Dubai so he gets a fair chance to defend himself under UAE law.

Officials' response

With help from Manda Bheem Reddy, vice-chairman of the state's NRI Advisory Committee, she met State Planning Board Vice-Chairperson Gadwal Vijayalakshmi, who is in charge of Prajavani, and state nodal officer K. Vidyasagar. The petition has been sent to the General Administration Department (NRI) secretary for action.

Families of Telangana workers in Gulf countries are increasingly turning to the Pravasi Prajavani when relatives run into trouble abroad.
