Green Visakha, an environmental organisation, has called for the cancellation of all permissions granted for artificial intelligence (AI) data centres in Andhra Pradesh’s Visakhapatnam and Anakapalli districts. The group expressed concerns about the environmental impact of these projects.
The demand from Green Visakha follows a rally held in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday. This event marked the first anniversary of the state government’s memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Google for developing an AI hub in the city.
The organisation specifically requested an immediate halt to construction activities at Tarluvada and Adavivaram. They highlighted that large data centres require substantial amounts of electricity and water for their operations.
This demand arises amid increasing scrutiny over the environmental and resource requirements of such large-scale facilities. The concerns raised by Green Visakha are contributing to a broader discussion on the ecological footprint of major development projects.
