Green Visakha, an environmental organisation, has called for the cancellation of all permissions granted for artificial intelligence (AI) data centres in Visakhapatnam and Anakapalli districts of Andhra Pradesh.
The organisation also demanded an immediate halt to construction activities at Tarluvada and Adavivaram. This appeal comes amidst growing scrutiny over the environmental and resource demands of large data centres.
The demand from Green Visakha follows a rally held in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday. This event marked the first anniversary of the state government's memorandum of understanding with Google to develop an AI hub in the city.
Environmental groups are increasingly concerned about the substantial electricity and water required for the operation of these large data centres. These resource needs are a key point of contention.
Green Visakha has formally presented its demands to the authorities. The government's response to these concerns is now awaited.
