Hyderabad space-tech startup Cosmoserve Space opened Base 1 on Thursday, November 5. The company calls it India's first private facility with space vision effect and microgravity simulation, and the sixth of its kind in the world. IT and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu inaugurated it.

What is inside

  • An Orbital Rendezvous and Capture Lab, a Space Robotics Innovation Lab, an ISO Class 8 clean room, and a Mission Simulation and Control Centre.
  • Robots for in-orbit satellite repair, refuelling and debris removal will be built and tested here.
  • Siasat puts the floor area at about 14,800 sq ft. The facility's cost was not disclosed.

Funding and missions

Cosmoserve raised a $6 million seed round, taking total funding past $9 million. Investors include Rebright Partners of Japan, Aranya Holdings, Naandi Ventures, AUM Ventures and Shakti VC. Its first payload, Mission Embrace, flew in July 2026 on Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram-1 rocket. In 2027 it plans robotic-capture tests on microgravity flights, a re-flight of Mission Embrace and a full-scale debris-capture demonstration. Commercial operations are due to start in 2028.

"Debris is becoming the limiting factor for every nation's space ambitions, including India's," said founder and CEO Chiranjeevi Phanindra. Sridhar Babu said Hyderabad is now home to over 30 space-tech companies. Siasat reports Union Minister Jitendra Singh, speaking virtually, put India's space economy at nearly $9 billion, projected to reach $40–45 billion in the coming decade.
